Yup, another milestone. It has been just over two months since GrandMasterPixel went into beta testing on the Android Market. This week, the 5000th picture was entered into the Arena to battle it out.

Congratulations to “lava floe” by meant2live218 — lucky number 5000 !

No prizes, apart from the glory of being randomly featured here

This is obviously a topical pic, inspired by Eyjafjallajökull’s recent activity. But did any one else notice ? Volcano-related pics seemed to start mysteriously appearing in GrandMasterPixel long before the world media was banging on about Eyjafjallajökull erupting. Spooky – it’s almost like GrandMasterPixel players can predict the future. Only time will tell

Left4Dead (I took the plunge and bought two copies when it was on special on Stream – been playing with a friend)
GrandMasterPixel (Android) … yeh, yeh, I know, shameless plug … it’s my own game. Well, you’ve got to actually play it to alpha test it, right ?

Mass Effect !! Yeah, yeah, I know, I’m over a year behind on this one – but it’s part of may strategy to not spend too much money on the latest games when I don’t have time to actually play them properly. It was on special on Steam, so I pounced. Only a few hours in, but I’m loving it so far.
Play testing my uber-secret Android game, soon to be released for alpha testing. Of course, this doesn’t really count as ‘playing’, since playtesting isn’t all fun and games, and can get quite tedious at times. It’s a labor of love.

Not a huge amount of gaming this month actually – been doing more coding and testing on my uber-secret-Android-project. Here’s what I’ve dabbled in:

The Gratuitous Space Battles beta – it’s currently undergoing lots of balance changes.
Dungeon Quest. It’s a braindead grind-RPG in the simplest sense. But it’s on my Android phone, and it’s on Facebook. It’s just there … so I play it.
Played just a little bit of Guitar Hero World Tour. I’m so out of practice now it’s pathetic

Trails 2 - a neat little motorcross game I bought on Steam. Free Flash ‘trial version’ here.
Wario’s Woods (Wii Virtual Console) – one of the greatest two-player puzzle games I’ve played. It gets revisited now and again.

Cave Story (available for Linux in at archive.org) — I missed this one when it came out (~2004), but over the last few days I saw a few little indirect references to it, I had to check it out. It’s a charming little platformer, with a decent mix of action and story. I hear there is a remake coming to WiiWare … I might well buy it when it’s released.
Shaun White Snowboarding : Roadtrip (Wii) — fun pickup and play game. Very easy to make progress, but tricky to master.

So, here’s my LD48 #13 entry. It’s a very simple little Frogger clone, “ported” to a bunch of platforms by the power of Java + Processing + Mobile Processing.

Sumotori Dreams : physics + AI + saki

Tipped off by dtx on #ludumdare, I discovered Sumotori Dreams, an 87 kilobyte game written by Peter Sotesz for the Breakpoint 2007 competition. It’s essentially sumo wresting meets physics simulation meets Funniest Home Videos. Runs nicely under Wine (0.9.12) on Linux too.

What I’ve been playing: Playstation 2

So, I bought a PS2, since they are cheap now, and I completely missed that (ongoing) era of gaming history. There is a a short list of highlight games for the PS2 that I want to progressively play my way through. At the moment, I’m playing:

God of War – fairly easy on the default difficulty setting, but the environments are quite pretty, especially the camera work. The button mashing battles are fun. I feel like I’m about half way through it, based on the ‘tech tree’.
We Love Katamari – amusing little game. Actually gets a little difficult after only a few levels.
Disgaea – this Japanese tactical role-playing game is quite deep. The cut scenes slipped in to progress the story have some pretty amusing scripting and voiceovers, with that strange ‘immature kids mucking around while fighting a serious war’ feel that I got when playing Advanced Wars DS.
ICO – the classic. Very pretty and emotive. I’m saving it for times when the house is quiet and I have extended stretches to become immersed in it, since it would be a waste to play it without getting the full atmosphere. Reminds me of something like the original Prince of Persia or Another World / Out of this World, but in 3D.
